Vale Ian Kiernan AO - A Great Australian Environmentalist

October 17, 2018

The Australian Marine Conservation Society today mourns the loss of a great Australian environmentalist, Ian Kiernan AO.

Kiernan was an accomplished yachtsman, who founded Clean Up Australia in response to the amount of rubbish he witnessed at sea.

AMCS CEO Darren Kindleysides, said “Ian spoke to Australians from all walks of life and channelled our love and stewardship of the natural environment.

“He was an outstanding advocate for our natural world, and recognised the primary importance of protecting the environment that sustains us.

“Ian understood the Australian people and their concern, not just for rubbish and pollution, but for solutions to critical environmental pressures. He was a vocal champion of marine sanctuaries to ease the pressure on our oceans, and for climate change action to protect our beautiful planet.

“Ian had a great respect for science and had a way of conveying it in the most simple and elegant terms.

“Ian leaves a legacy of environmental stewardship that he’s built over decades of working with volunteers around Australia. He will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” Kindleysides said.
