Stopping Extinction
AMCS is the sole environmental representative member of the National Maugean Skate Recovery Team, working urgently with other key stakeholders for a solution.
The Recovery Team has developed a Roadmap to coordinate recovery efforts. Agreed actions are to:
- Improve water quality in Macquarie Harbour.
- Establish a captive breeding and release program to supplement the wild population.
- Continue building awareness about the species within the local community.
Why AMCS is fighting to protect the Maugean skate
The Maugean skate is facing imminent extinction.
Macquarie Harbour is only home for the Maugean skate but intensive salmon farming, compounded by manipulated river flows to support hydroelectricity production, is depleting oxygen and choking the skates to death.
We vow to represent science-based conservation solutions to protect our endemic Aussie battler, and work with all stakeholders to ensure this species safety.
