Toondah Wetlands Reprieve
A mega marina resort, threatening internationally significant wetlands near Brisbane with huge impacts on dugongs, dolphins and turtles, has been withdrawn.
In April, we welcomed the federal environment minister’s proposed decision to refuse the outrageously massive marina resort in Moreton Bay. As a result, the developer withdrew the application.
The development would have destroyed 40 hectares of mangrove and seagrasses in Ramsar wetlands in the Moreton Bay Marine Park, for 3,600 apartments, hotels, shops and a marina, wiping out feeding grounds for green turtles and dugongs.
Nurseries for fishes and other animals, mangrove and seagrass habitats are vital for healthy marine ecosystems. They are crucial carbon sinks that can store 2-4 times more carbon than tropical rainforests, making them important to help slow global warming.
As we face the twin biodiversity and climate crises, we must protect these blue carbon habitats that also support species vulnerable to extinction.
Thank You
Thank you to Redlands 2030 and the Toondah Alliance, the Australian Conservation Foundation, BirdLife Australia and the communities who campaigned for years to stop this mega-development in such crucial ecosystems. AMCS supported the Toondah Alliance.
