Ban Oil and Gas in the Great Australian Bight

The whales and wildlife of the Great Australian Bight are still in danger.

Thanks to public pressure, as of February 2020 all of the oil giants – BP, Chevron and Equinor – have now pulled out of the Great Australian Bight. This is a great win for our marine life, coastal communities, and the hundreds of thousands of Australians who spoke up in defence of one of the true marvels of the Australian coast.

The Bight is a nursery for southern right whales, and is home to endangered sea lions and almost 40 species of dolphins and whales. 85% of the species that live in the Bight are found nowhere else on the planet!

Drilling for oil in the deep, wild waters of the Great Australian Bight is simply too risky – it could devastate marine life, local communities, fishing and tourism businesses. An oil spill in our Great Australian Bight could be catastrophic, reaching as far as Bondi.

What’s more, if tapped and burned, the oil in our Bight would single-handedly blow Australia’s carbon budget—and our liveable climate.
