Devastating Bleaching
2024 recorded the most widespread coral mortality.
New data from last year’s coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef reveals the most widespread coral mortality ever recorded.
Underwater surveys conducted by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) confirmed that 41% of corals in the southern section of the Reef died in 2024.
This marks the largest annual decline since AIMS’ Long Term Monitoring Program began, driven by record-high ocean temperatures caused by climate change.
One-third of corals in the Far Northern Section also perished.
Meanwhile, water pollution and destructive fishing practices continue to threaten the Reef’s survival, along with the $6.4 billion tourism industry and 64,000 jobs it supports.
With extreme heatwaves already affecting the Reef again this summer, the urgency to act has never been greater. With a federal election this year, we need strong commitments from all political parties to protect this global treasure.
The decisions made in the next three years will determine the Reef’s fate for decades to come.
