Unwrap Our Groceries
Thank you to our 2,073 citizen science plastics investigators, and supporters all across Australia.
With your help, we’re holding supermarkets accountable for failing to address the plastic pollution crisis.
Unwrapped 2024: Plastic Use in Australian Supermarkets – the second audit report on Australia’s $130 billion supermarket industry was released in November 2024.
With the help of our investigators, we found that over 70% of the time, customers are being charged more for loose fruit and vegetables compared with plasticwrapped produce.
In the midst of a cost-of-living and environmental crisis, shoppers are being penalised for avoiding plastic packaging and buying only what they need.
AMCS Plastics Campaigner Tara said: “Recycling just can’t keep up with the amount of plastic waste we produce. We need to cut our plastic use, but the supermarkets are not giving us a fair option to do that.”
