AMCS is saddened by the tragic loss of life of Daniel Christidis following a shark bite in Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays. We applaud the efforts made by first responders and members of the public who assisted in the events.
AMCS commends the response by the Whitsundays tourism industry and the Queensland Government.
Following the industry and expert roundtable convened today, we welcome the government’s plan to develop a high profile education campaign to educate locals and visitors about shark safety and undertake further research into shark behaviours.
We support the commitment to implementing effective, long-term solutions with the tourism industry based on scientific advice. We also welcome confirmation that there are no plans to place drumlines in Cid Harbour recognising they cannot guarantee swimmer safety.
AMCS continues to call for improved non-lethal shark control methods. The positive steps taken by the government and Whitsundays community towards education and awareness will assist in a more effective and comprehensive program protecting both bathers and the marine environment.
