Win for the Reef: Government delivers on trans-shipping plan election promise

October 29, 2017

Labor took the ban to the 2015 election, but released a consultation paper last month that could have allowed trans-shipping in the Marine Park under certain rules.

Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) Fight For Our Reef Campaign Director Imogen Zethoven said the news was warmly welcomed and acknowledged the Minister for delivering his government’s election promise.

“I am absolutely thrilled the government have followed through on this crucial ban.

“Our precious Reef is already under severe threat from climate change fueled by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gas. The risk of contaminating waters from accidental coal and oil shipment spills needed to be removed.

“It is a huge relief. I’d like to thank Minister Miles for his leadership and acting upon our real concerns today,” said AMCS Campaign Director Imogen Zethoven.

Trans-shipping is the transfer of bulk materials like coal, sugar or petroleum from one vessel to another at sea.
