The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has warmly welcomed the decision by the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to veto a NAIF loan to Adani and called on the leader of the Qld LNP Tim Nicholls to support the Premier’s decision.
AMCS Fight for our Reef Campaign Director Imogen Zethoven said the decision today showed that the Premier had recognised the huge concern felt by people in Queensland about the damaging Adani Carmichael coal project.
“This is a huge win for people power. Thousands of Queenslanders have written to their local MPs, rung their MPs and met with their MPs to urge the Premier to veto the loan. Today she has listened and acted.
“Now it’s time for Mr Tim Nicholls to recognise that the vast majority of Queenslanders do not support this dirty coal project. We urge him to join the Premier in vetoing the NAIF loan.
“Adani’s coal project will accelerate climate change which has already done huge damage to the Great Barrier Reef. Coal kills coral.
“Australians want public money spent on schools, hospitals and renewable energy projects. The $1 billion of NAIF funding should be spent on renewable energy in regional Queensland to turbo charge the transition to a sun powered state”, Ms Zethoven said.
