Top End Sea Turtle Appeal
Australia is the one of the few countries in the world that has six of the world's seven species of sea turtle. Few other places are so important for these ancient mariners - so few other nations have such responsibility to safeguard their future.

But right now less than 1% of our globally significant Top End seas are protected. We need your help to ensure this critical habitat for the world's sea turtles is protected.

Please support our urgent Top End Sea Turtle Appeal and invest in our sea turtles' survival.

The tropical seas across Northern Australia are a global hotspot for sea turtles, with five of our six species laying their eggs on Northern Territory's sandy beaches. The Top End's beaches are so important for nesting that a staggering 100 different turtle tracks have been counted along a single one-kilometre stretch of beach in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

But each year hundreds of our sea turtles drown in discarded, drifting 'ghost nets' or active fishing gear. If the nets don't catch them, turtles are killed by boat strikes or choked by plastic bags and other marine debris. During egg-laying season, clutches are eaten by feral pigs and wild dogs along the coast.

If turtle hatchlings avoid attack by wild dogs and feral pigs and make it to the water, they then face the risk of boat strike and fishing ropes, lines and ghost nets. It's little wonder such devastation is occurring across the north, with less than 1% of our Top End seas protected. AMCS is working to urgently secure a system of marine protected areas across the north, but we cannot do it without your support.

Australia, especially our tropical Top End, is one of the most important places for sea turtles on the planet.

This is a privilege, but it also places an extra level of responsibility for Australia to do all that we can to ensure their future recovery in our waters.

Please give to our Top End Sea Turtle appeal and help us protect the last remaining refuges for our precious sea turtles.

Please support our campaign and let the Minister know that our turtles and other Top End sea life deserve better by sending an online letter here.

Your donation will mean that we can protect more of our sea turtle breeding and feeding grounds from active and discarded fishing gear, boat strike and habitat damage. Please donate today and invest in the future of healthy tropical seas.
